The first thing you will notice about silverfish is their small size. They are generally less than 1½ inches in length (for their main body). Their antennae's, however, are fairly long and can be ¾ the length of their body.

The second thing you will notice about silverfish is their color. Silverfish are a flat greyish silvery color (they don't reflect light even though it looks like they may). Unlike many insects they will rest with their body curved. When they move their head and tail will go in opposite direction much like a fish does when it swims. In fact, silverfish got their name from their color and the movement of their body "silver" and "fish".

The last thing you will notice about silverfish is that they are usually in damp dark places of your home. This is why they are most commonly found in bathrooms, crawlspaces, and basements of people's homes. They require high humidity to function well and are scare of anything larger than them, so naturally they will stay in dark places where few people visit.
